A popular Austrian pilgrimage site: Wallfahrtskirche Maria Plain
The pilgrimage church of Maria Plain is located close to your Hotel & Gasthof Bräuwirth in Bergheim. The church is one of Austria's most popular pilgrimage sites dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and the site of an annual performance of Mozart's Coronation Mass. The basilica, commissioned by Prince Archbishop Max Gandolf von Khuenburg in 1674, is a major Bergheim landmark and popular attraction.
Visitors also enjoy a unique panoramic view stretching across Salzburg to the Alps. The basilica of the Maria Plain has long been an important place of power and retreat for many people, even in Mozart's day: "To Maria Plain on Sunday morning, not from a sense of devotion, but purely to enjoy the beautiful view." (Excerpt from Leopold Mozart's letter to his daughter Nannerl, 3/9/1784)
